Accompanied by a traditional Spanish singer and dancer, celebrated guitarist Juan Martín will bring his unique brand of flamenco music to Halifax in an intimate performance at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m.

Recently voted one of the top three guitarists in the world by Guitar Player magazine, Martín is returning to Halifax after a sold out performance at the 2006 Atlantic Jazz Festival. An accomplished musician, Martín played for Picasso at his 90th birthday party, has been joined onstage by legendary musicians such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Stevie Ray Vaughan and was the first flamenco artist to perform with London’s Philharmonic Orchestra.

For over 20 years, Martín has been introducing audiences around the world to his one-of-a-kind style of flamenco. Spanish newspaper El Mundo said, “He has a terrifyingly good technique and an absolute dominance of the guitar, filling the concert hall with crystalline clarity.? The London Times said “he is a giant in the flamenco guitar tradition.?

His latest release, Rumbas Originales features 16 of Martín’s original compositions from throughout his career. Rock ‘n’ Reel World said, “…the real centerpiece is Martín’s dazzling and frenetic fretwork, as he performs with an alacrity and dexterity that renders what he does a joy to hear. Martín conjures a beautiful, moody atmosphere with Cuban and Arabic motifs emerging amidst the sultry musical vistas.?

Born in Andalucia, Spain, Martín studied under famed flamenco virtuoso Paco de Lucia. With 14 recordings and four videos in his catalogue, Martín has also written a flamenco method book, El Arte Flamenco de la Guitarra, which is studied by music students across the globe. His videos are among the best selling guitar instruction videos in the world.
